Killeen police identified the dead man as 28-year-old Jamaal Jeffrey Skipper, a Killeen resident.
Skipper was a 2006 graduate of Shoemaker High School and a former football player for the Kilgore Junior College Rangers.
Killeen police officers were called to the 1200 block of Covey Lane about 9:40 a.m. after receiving a 911 call. Police found Skipper, inside his car, dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
According to some Covey Lane residents, the sound of gunshots can be heard on any given night. “It’s crazy because I heard gunshots the night before they found him, but I didn’t think anything of it because I’m so used to hearing it,” one nearby resident said. She declined to give her name out of fear of retribution. “Then they started to shoot again the next night; that’s when I started getting scared.
Another neighbor, who declined to give her name for the same reason, said she also heard gunshots the night after Skipper was found dead in the car. “The night after, there were gunshots, AK-47, right here,” she said. “The gunshots are almost every weekend around here. You know not to look immediately out your window. ... It scared me to death. It makes me think I need to find somewhere else to live.”
Police were dispatched to the area again early Sunday and retrieved additional bullet shell casings.
